ADAPTATION

There are so many ways we can survive if we have to with what we find laying around us or close by from the refuse.  There are many ways we can adapt what we already have enable us to create something very useful and beneficial and cost effective and recycling is always great.

The Stoves

ROCKET STOVES

Ian's rocket stove above is a work of art and it works like a beauty and is simple to make if you have tin snips.  A few twigs and you have enough heat to cook your dinner.

THE FRIDGES

This works better in a drier environment.
You Need .. two clay pots, some sand  and a way to plug the hole in the bottom of the pots.

  • Get two terracotta pots, one needs to fit inside the other with 2 inch gap between them.  They can be the similar  size remembering that  one  is slightly raised.  They need to be unglazed, unsealed terracotta.  The cooling occurs by evaporation through the porous clay.
Look around for recycled pots you can use during the council chuck out twice a year, or by asking friends .

You could make them if you were inclined to do that or know what you are doing.
  • You need to  plug the holes in the bottom of the pots so that the water doesn’t drain out of the bottom.
  • Line the inside of the larger pot with sand, and place the smaller one inside.
  • Top up the water in the sand layer every day so it stays damp, and cover the top with a towel.

When it’s  40 degrees outside, the inside of the Terra-Fridge is 15 degrees, so food keeps a lot longer than it would without refrigeration.
